Michelle Briddon, Club Secretary believes coaching is about far more than football. This year’s International Women’s Day theme is Give to Gain celebrating the power of reciprocity and support.
“When we talk about ‘Give to Gain’, it really sums up what coaching does for you. You give your time, your energy and your encouragement but what you gain in confidence, skills and personal growth is incredible. Coaching pushes you out of your comfort zone in the best possible way.”
At New Tupton Ivanhoe, there are more opportunities than ever for women to get involved, whether they’re experienced players or completely new to the game.
Wildcats – Building Confidence Through Football
Our Wildcats sessions provide girls with a safe, supportive and fun introduction to football.
Michelle explains:
“Wildcats isn’t just about learning to kick a ball. It’s about building confidence, friendships and a sense of belonging. We’ve seen girls come in shy and unsure, and within weeks they’re leading warm-ups and encouraging others.”
For many women, volunteering within Wildcats becomes the first step into coaching.
Comets – Football for Every Star
Our Comets sessions, delivered in partnership with Bridge and Bloom, provide inclusive football opportunities for children with disabilities.
“Every star shines in their own way,” Michelle says. “Comets shows what football is really about — inclusion, patience and celebrating progress at every level. Coaching in this environment grows your empathy and leadership skills in ways you can’t imagine until you experience it.”
Little Ivanhoes – The First Football Steps
Little Ivanhoes introduces children aged 3–7 to the joy of movement and teamwork.
Michelle highlights the impact on coaches:
“Coaching our youngest players teaches you patience, creativity and communication. You learn how to adapt quickly and make every child feel valued. Those skills don’t just stay on the pitch they help you in work and everyday life too.”
Growing as a Person
Michelle is clear that coaching isn’t just about developing players it’s about developing yourself.
“Women sometimes underestimate what they’re capable of. Coaching builds resilience, decision-making and confidence. You find your voice. You learn to lead. And you become part of a supportive community.”
The club supports all new coaches with DBS checks, safeguarding, first aid and introduction to coaching courses, alongside ongoing CPD opportunities.
“You don’t have to be an expert. You just have to care. We’ll support you every step of the way.”
A Call to Action
This International Women’s Day, New Tupton Ivanhoe is encouraging more women to consider coaching.
“If you’ve ever thought about getting involved, now is the time. You’ll give your time but you’ll gain confidence, friendships, skills and pride. Football needs more female role models, and our girls need to see what’s possible.”
